    The Backstory

    It all began...

about fifteen years ago at a patio table overlooking the Guadalupe River, at a little restaurant called Annie's Table, in Gruene, Texas. In those days of our marriage, we would take a yearly trip to the Fredericksburg area every April. At this point, we couldn't begin to fathom that one day a plot of land in Northeast Texas would claim our heart in such a mighty way; instead, we thought Hill Country was where we were meant to be. Thank goodness He knows best...

Anyway, that sunny, but balmy day on the patio - sharing chips and salsa - I finally shared a long time dream of mine, and was still a bit shocked when my oh-so-patient husband (once again) took it in stride when I said, "I'd like to own and run a B&B."

He just nodded and we kind of began to plan, right there at the table, drawing on a napkin. Now - mind you - I was in the last days of my college education, with a whole teaching career still looming large on the horizon, and he was still actively traveling with his busy career several days a week. Both boys were in college at this point, and we had two young grandchildren that we were super involved with.

It's not like we needed to look for things to do!

Time moved on, and so did our family. Interestingly enough, my first teaching position was further east than we had expected. We moved to accommodate that position, renting the most darling little blue farmhouse while we searched for the perfect place to buy. Our time in that place was near perfect, filled with long, lazy weekends of driving back roads looking at properties, starlit evenings on the back deck, and the dawning realization that East Texas  - and not Hill Country - was our true North.

The kids continued to grow up and away, graduating, beginning careers, falling in love, and eventually marrying. When we found this piece of land, with only the cabin on stilts and the shell of what we now call The Bunkhouse, I laughed. Mike beamed. He had found his land.

I thought he had lost his mind.

The place had stood empty for two years. Grass was knee high. Bugs lay dead all throughout the two buildings. There was no running water. The well had run dry. Our AT&T cell phones had no service. Who even knew if we'd have internet?

Even then there was a greater plan in place...

So many times in this life, trust is required to get anywhere. That was definitely so in our case. I needed to trust my husband, and he was trusting God. Together, with our children and (now) three amazing grands, Wildernest Bed and Breakfast is entering its fourth year of business and has just opened its adjacent multi-purpose venue, The Hitchin' Post!

It is most definitely a family business, one that we are so very proud to share with our talented kids, their spouses, and their children. Each of them bring something to the table that we lack, and that is the beauty of a family business...it's a combined effort, a combined love, a combined reward.

Our hope is that when our guests leave, they feel they have been a treasured honorary member of the Wildernest family, whether it was for a day, a week, for a wedding weekend, or for a special celebration! We are here to help make a moment in time matter.

Because - just like that moment at the patio table in Gruene, TX, so many years ago - moments do matter!

    The Cabin Bedroom Makeover!

    BEFORE

Always a romantic room, due to its spaciousness, back veranda, and breathtaking views, the bedroom of The Cabin was in line for a makeover after the completion of The Hitchin' Post. Most commonly occupied by honeymooners and couples celebrating special occasions, we wanted to create an intimate, romantic atmosphere in keeping with these celebrations, while also staying true to the rustic beauty of the log structure.

To do the honors, we turned to home stager and decorator extraordinaire, Jennifer Gross, and y'all...she did NOT disappoint!

    AFTER

Jen & her team transformed the room by replacing the area rug with one with muted neutral tones, added ruffled linens and bedding by Queen's House, a few items from her shop 3130Home, and traded in the rustic lamps for for the softer egg basket lamps from Hobby Lobby.

What this picture does not show is the soft floor-length ruffled white curtains that adorn the four windows, the cozy seating just for two, and the pops of blush that go from the bedroom right on into the bath, adding the perfect touch of romance to a still-rustic, but now chic -getaway!

    From our Guests

    Cory & Jessica, Dallas

"I can't tell you just how much fun we had, and what a relaxing weekend it was! This place is the definition on peaceful and relaxing.
When you pull up and see the two sasquatches, you know you are at the right place! Staci and Mike are the greatest hosts I've ever had. The cabin was beautiful and their property was just breathtaking. If you love animals, you will love the chickens, 2 goats, 2 horses, and the 2 dogs. The dogs you will see running and chasing squirrels. The horses just love people and want to be petted. And the goats are just silly. If you love breakfast, then this is the place for you! Breakfast is always a surprise but a very good one! You might get lucky and get the best biscuits ever. I highly recommend Wildernest if you want a relaxing getaway at a great price."

    Federico, Plano

"Do not hesitate to book, you will not regret it. This exceeded expectations in the best ways possible, and the same holds true for the hosts. Mike and Staci have created and maintained something really special here, and we feel very grateful to have been a part of it for a few days. Thank you for a wonderful stay."

    Tamsin, UK

"Wildernest Ranch is a wonderful place to stay! The Bunkhouse is beautifully decorated with such cool little touches all in a cowboy/ranch theme. Everything was spotless. The ranch is located in a peaceful location. There are horses, chickens, and goats. Trails to walk on. I ran a few times on the country road and didn't see a soul/car. The fire pit to sit around in the evening is wonderful! The best bit, though, is the people. You couldn't hope to meet nicer people. Nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to ensure our stay was fun."

Alan, Amber, Kristy, and Ryan, Arlington

"We had a short but sweet stay. We will be back for more stargazing, campfires, relaxing, and laughter. We truly enjoy the attention to detail and friendly handshakes! We'll leave you with words from our 9-year-old, 'Wow, this is the best place we have ever stayed!' Apparently it beat out the Great Floridian in Disney World

    Mr. and Mrs. Tuesburg, Dallas

"This was the most perfect weekend-honeymoon-getaway! Everything was so much better than we imagined! We had such kind and gracious hosts. We don't want to go beck to reality, but we are so grateful to have spent a couple of nights here. We can't wait to come back!"
